It’s been hot around here, and the idea of cooking has sounded horrible. Luckily, this low calorie smoothie bowl doesn’t heat up the kitchen. All you need is a good blender and a few easy ingredients.

I love whipping up these smoothie bowls in my Vitamix, then topping them with sliced almonds and chocolate chips. I get most of the ingredients at Costco, but sometimes I get them in small batches at Trader Joes (PS: Looking for a healthy guide to grocery shopping? Check out this one for Costco and this one for Trader Joe’s).

Low calorie smoothie Bowl Recipe

3 cups low fat plain yogurt (vanilla has a lot of added sugar, so avoid that!)
1 cup frozen berries OR
1/2 cup berries and 1 frozen Acai packet
1 frozen banana
3 big handfuls of spinach .

Blend and sprinkle sliced almonds and dark chocolate chips on top. Other possible toppings include walnuts, cashews, goji berries, yogurt covered raisins, regular raisins, homemade granola and more.

Hacks

I always have frozen banana and frozen spinach in my freezer. I buy them in bulk from Costco and we never seem to use them all. So, into the freezer they go – waiting until the day that they will contribute to the perfect smoothie bowl.

For berries, like to get Kirkland’s frozen mixed berries from Costco. Beware the seeds of the blackberries, though. They can get stuck in your teeth even after you’ve blended them! When purchasing your own brand, check the nutrition label to make sure there’s no added sugar. The same thing goes for the Acai: Make sure you’re not accidentally buying sweetened sorbet.

I also buy my sliced almonds at Costco. They have a lovely, large bag of them that I use for lots of different recipes.
